I know Kelsey already touched on “Greek Life” from her perspective, so I thought I would add my input on it. Greek life is something I never considered until last semester. Although, almost all of my friends are in greek life, so according to them it was almost inevitable that I would eventually consider joining.

I used to think that greek life wasn’t for me, that I was independent and didn’t want or need to be a part of greek life. I didn’t want to be tied to one organization. I didn’t want to pay for “friends” or do any thing unnecessary to join. I used to think a lot of things about greek life that aren’t true. Three years have changed my perspective on Greek Life a lot.

My perspective on greek life has gone 180. I now understand you aren’t paying for friends, you are paying to do stuff with your friends, to have fun, the money you put into the club comes back to you ultimately. I realized I can still be an independent person and be a part of greek life. Ultimately, I realized I had a lot to gain from joining a greek organization on campus.

In the past couple weeks, my life has already begun to change. I received an open bid from a fraternity on campus and participated in Pledge day this past Saturday. Pledge day is an exciting day, where you just spend time with the club, getting to know the people and what the club is all about. It’s a big day here at Muskingum for a lot of people.

If you take one thing away from reading this, just remember to keep your mind open to all of the wonderful opportunities that are offered, you never know what can come of it.

I today, as every morning, did it instinctively.

I take this view for granted day in and day out, and I’m partial but I think the lakeside house I live in offers some of the greatest views of campus.

When I look out my window I look right over the college lake, where I can see the spoonholder, and during warmer months the fountain. ( I live on the second floor)

But it’s the view that I get every morning as soon as I walk out the door and onto my front porch that amazes me even more.

Look up the large hill on the right and you’re looking at the “women’s dormitory”, which we now affectionately call Patton, which is easiest the most beautiful of all of the resident halls.

You look straight ahead as you walk the hill down to the sidewalk, and now because with few leaves on the tree, you can see all the way down through the football field and across campus.

And finally as you turn left to walk to class, you glance over the lake and directly up to Brown Chapel and our newest building, Walter hall, which is a sight in itself.

These views are something I take for granted, and I would choose to write this on a drab Wednesday, but the beauty here never ceases to amaze me.
I am lucky enough to be reminded every morning and every time I step on the front porch what surrounds me, and that’s everything that makes Muskingum, what it is.

It’s the simple charm and beauty of a college on a hill.

Now with that being said, I’d like to focus a little more on the importance of Greek Life here at Muskingum. Greek members are very prominent on campus–although they aren’t really the majority. They are very involved in a number of clubs and activities, and they are generally having a good time. I know some of you probably don’t think “Going Greek” is for you. Maybe it’s not. But I also know that I didn’t think it was for me. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made–and I’m not even a full week in.

It’s a really neat thing to have all of these people that care about you. It’s definitely a lot of fun. It pushes you to better yourself in ways that you can’t do alone, and it gives you a strong support system in your life. It gives you something bigger than any other club or organization, something that goes beyond your four years of college. The great thing about Muskingum is that it’s not at all like your stereotypical sororities and fraternities. All kinds of different people are accepted. More on that if you read my article above.

The other cool thing about Muskingum is that you don’t have to “Go Greek” to be involved in the campus, or even to be considered “cool,” if that even really matters in college. Everybody’s accepted and it’s pretty easy to find somewhere you fit in if you try to.

When it comes down to it, Muskingum offers a lot of opportunities for growing and expanding your interests. It’s a great way to get involved in things you’ve never even thought about. And you’re sure to make new friends and have a great time.

Who doesn’t like sledding and snow ball fights. We do have some pretty awesome hills for sledding, so that is a plus! How else would you choose a college anyway? So right now we are just waiting for some snow, which I am sure will appear sooner or later.

The snow on the trees, the ground, and buildings enhances the beauty of the campus here at Muskingum. Of course, I like to look from behind a window within a warm room. I think when the snow covers the trees here the whole campus is beautiful.

For now I  am going to leave you with that.

Also yesterday was Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday, so I thought I would share a quote from him with you. He is one of my favorite writers and poets. ”Never to suffer would never to have been blessed.”

Last semester I mentioned how I was involved with a student internship program creating a museum quality exhibit to celebrate Muskingum’s 175th Anniversary.

The date of the anniversary is actually March 18th (1837), however, our exhibit will not open until the third week of April.

We will be opening the museum for the board of trustees, which is also our Muskiepalooza weekend.

To summarize, it’s basically going to be a very hectic, but very exciting weekend.

This semester for the museum, a couple of students and I are working on some last minute details and research, such as who is in this picture and when was it taken.

From these pictures we will begin going over layout and design and producing our display cases with objects.

This is something I feel very privileged and honored to be a part of and I can’t wait for it to open in a few short months.

My freshman year, I wasn’t involved in much. I wrote for the paper, and there at the end of the year became an editor. But otherwise, I attended classes, did homework, and stayed in my room. This year has been completely different. A lot of it had to do with friends, some of it was just the intimidation factor of actually going out and doing something. I’ve been there, and I’ve done it, and I advise you to get involved from the very start.

This year I am heavily involved with campus media, serving as a sections editor and copy editor for the Black & Magenta, as well as generating content for Orbit Media as a whole–which is what we’ve deemed our conversion initiative this year. I’ve gone to different events hosted by groups on campus, I’m becoming involved with the yearbook for course credit, and I’ve most recently accepted an open bid to Alpha Sigma Alpha, a sorority on campus.

My schedule is absolutely insane. I don’t have anywhere near the downtime I did last year, and I really have to focus myself to do homework and the like. But, I love it. I’ve made so many new friends this year alone, and I really enjoy feeling connected to others in a common goal.

So, to summarize: get involved! The sooner you do it, the faster you’re going to find a place you belong. And once you find that groove, things are great.

I hope you all had a great week! It’s Friday and I have my first week of the spring semester under my belt.

I am taking a diverse course load this semester, everything from geology to adulthood and aging. This should prove to be an interesting semester, but that is the beauty of going to a liberal arts school.

My big announcement for today is all about Muskiepalooza, which is a big event every year later in the spring. This year it is a combination of a performer and a carnival, on the off year it is just a carnival. It is a big awesome event for a lot of people. An announcement was made last night and the performer this year will be…  Mike Posner!

How exciting is that? I am very much so looking forward to Muskiepalooza now!

I hope everyone has enjoyed their holiday season and a few days off.

Things on campus are quickly picking back up, with rush week for independents who want to join a Greek club beginning this Saturday.

I was given my seminar for English and I will be reading “The Taming of the Shrew” by Shakespeare. So if anyone has any input I’m all ears!

I hope that for those of you taking finals, you have prepared well and are ready for the test. And for those who haven’t, that you study up and become ready.

It’s hard to say if I will be writing on Wednesdays next semester, but I very much look forward to sharing my last semester as an undergrad with all of you readers.
