These are the students you’ll meet here on our blog:
Scott is a senior from North Canton, Ohio. He attended Jackson High School in Massillon. Scott is studying speech communication and mathematics. He is involved with WMCO (the campus radio station), Campus Crusade for Christ and a new campus organization, the Association of Women in Mathematics, a non-gender specific group that encourages women to pursue science and mathematical fields, fields that are male-dominated.
It was small, personal classes and the beauty of campus that first attracted Scott to Muskingum University.
Scott’s advice to high school students is: “Don’t try to force yourself to fit the mold of a college or university. When you arrive at the college/university that is for you, you will know it. Trust me!”
Scott blogs on Thursdays.
Katie is a senior from Newark, Ohio. She graduated from Lakewood High School in nearby Hebron. Katie is studying English Education with a minor in History. In addition to being a tour guide, First Year Seminar mentor, and Muskie Preview Leader, Katie is also a member of Student Senate and the FAD Club.
When it came to choosing a college, Katie said “I chose Muskingum because I am from a small town, where you know, or are at least familiar with everyone, and that was what I wanted when I chose a private college like Muskingum. I had met Muskingum Alums and it was obvious when they spoke of Muskingum how much they loved, and still cared about Muskingum even years after graduating. Not only that, but as soon as I visited campus, it sold itself, absolutely beautiful, and with one trip across the quad with a tour guide, you really got a feel for just how close and personal this campus is.”
She advises that high school students keep their options open during their college search and be excited about the many opportunities their futures will hold. Check out schools, sit in classes, take tours of campuses, and try to imagine yourself being there for four years.
Katie blogs on Wednesdays.
Kelsey is a sophomore from McConnelsville, Ohio and a graduate of Morgan High School. Kelsey is double majoring in Digital Media Design and English. She is currently the Special Sections Editor for the Black & Magenta (Muskingum University’s newspaper), which she also writes and takes photos for, and the campus radio and television stations (WMCO and Orbit TV).
Muskingum’s small class sizes and beautiful campus are what initially influenced Kelsey’s decision on the right school for her.
Her advice to high school students in their search for the right college: “Look at the academics, of course, but also look at the things you’ll be spending your time doing. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”
Kelsey blogs on Mondays.
Brandon is a junior from Pittsburgh, PA and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School. He is a Psychology major with a minor in Art. Brandon is very active on campus as a tour guide, desk worker at the Chess Center, and President of both the Equality Alliance and Student Senate (class of 2013).
Brandon chose Muskingum initially based on the scholarships he was awarded and a personal connection he felt towards the campus. Although early on he did have some reservations about his choice to come here, once he became involved on campus he made friends, fell in love with Muskingum, and realized he had definitely made the right choice.
Brandon’s advice to high school students is: “Check out a variety of schools – big ones, small ones, rural, and urban. When you are checking the school out and visiting, try to picture yourself going to class, living in the dorms, and eating in the dining hall. But, also check to see that they have all of the important things such as your academic and extracurricular interests available.”
Brandon blogs on Fridays.
Stay tuned for more new bloggers coming soon!
