As an incoming freshman last year, I was anxious get involved at Muskingum. I quickly found the New Concord Fire Department. After a brief introduction at the the annual fall Activities fair, I attended a few Wednesday night meetings and decided it was something I wanted to do.

Last year I completed a 136-hour EMT-basic course, taught at and paid for by the department. In return, I make squad runs and plan on being a member for the rest of my time as Muskingum.

Besides gaining my EMT-basic certification, I have found other positive aspects of joining the department. Right away I met a lot of new people, every one of them willing to help me out and make sure that I fit in alright. At a volunteer fire department, it’s hard to find people not willing to help out. I enjoyed the opportunity to help others, while also learning a bit about myself along the way.

I have met a lot of great people at the New Concord Fire Department, and I continue to find new experiences every day.
