A whole new family.

Hi all.

As I sit here thinking about what to share with you, I can’t help but smile. It’s safe to say that this weekend was the best weekend of my life. As you know, I’ve joined the sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha. As of Friday, I have the knowledge of who my Big is. As of Saturday, I am officially an active member of the sorority. For those of you who aren’t aware, a “Big” is basically one sister that you can turn to and who ideally has your best interests in mind. The sorority has a number of family lines, ranging from little (which is my current role) to Big, G-big, etc. It’s a pretty neat thing. The way I see it, ultimately, is like a family within a family. Similar to the way an actual family works, you have your immediate family which consists of your family line–similar to parents and siblings. Then you have your extended family–cousins, grandparents, etc.

I can’t deny what an incredible feeling it is to have this many people become such an essential part of your life. The best thing I can report to you all from this past week is that very thing…the acknowledgment that I have a whole family here at Muskingum that loves and supports me. That’s not something that goes away with graduation, either. It’s for a lifetime.

This week and those following will come with many challenges. There is a lot going on both academically and in other organizations. It’s stressful, there’s no doubt about it. But you adjust to your schedule, in college. You figure out how to keep yourself going and how to keep yourself sane. And I know that this new family of mine is going to be really helpful in this.

Have a great week.

Kelsey
