Don’t Drop the Dining Hall (There’s more options than you think)!

You walk in to either Patton or Thomas Hall for lunch/dinner and you are starving–you have had a long day of classes, took a major exam, and had practice for a sport after all of that. You walk over to the hot food and grab a plate full of fries, a fried chicken patty, and a nice glass of soda. Sound good? Although this meal may sound delicious now, that may not be the case after adding on that freshman 15-20. The great news about this–IT IS TOTALLY PREVENTABLE!

Many students fail to see the healthy, not to mention tasty options that the dining hall provides. Let’s start with getting something to drink. Instead of grabbing for that glass of soda, this can easily be substituted with a glass of water, milk, or tea. May sound gross, but your body will thank you later on!

As for the food: CUT OUT THE FRIED FOOD! Our dining hall has many options when it comes to food. Immediately steer yourself away from the fried food and search out something that will not only satisfy your body’s hunger, but will taste good too! Meats like turkey burgers instead of hamburgers, pork, turkey, and baked chicken are all available pretty often that can make a healthy serving of protein!

Rice is another item that is served often. If you don’t like plain rice, throw some steamed veggies on top, or enjoy the delicious stir fry that the dining hall serves. ALWAYS have plenty of vegetables–there are so many options there is something for everyone!

My favorite thing about both dining halls on campus is that they both have a wonderful salad bar. They each offer different kinds of lettuce (remember the greener the better!), a variety of vegetables, meats, and dressings (including oil and vinegar) to make your salad your own. And if on top of all those options and you still do not see anything that will satisfy you, there are sandwich bars in each dining hall–these include deli meats and options of making PB&J’s, along with a grilled cheese with the sandwich maker.

Don’t forget to grab a piece of fresh fruit on the way out, and steer clear of the ice cream machine and dessert table so you aren’t huffing and puffing up the hills at your next class!

Have a great week everyone!
