BE TRUE TO YOU or INDEPENDENT!

For the first time, we had Greek rush in the fall (it usually happens in the winter). Other bloggers have mentioned what Rush Week and Bid Day are, but I want to talk about the benefits of being an independent student (meaning belonging to no sorority or fraternity).

If the Greek life doesn’t seem right for you, that is okay! Greek life is not for everyone and it doesn’t mean you are going to have fewer friends, or have less fun. In fact, I have many friends that are in sororities and many that are in the process of pledging (including my roommate!).

A great thing about Muskingum is that there are a lot of events that are hosted for independent students only.  For example, on bid day this past Saturday, the Independent Student Senate Representatives hosted a tailgate before the football game for independents that decided not to go Greek that day. It was a little chilly, but it was great to hang out with other fellow Muskie’s and play corn-hole while eating great food and enjoying hot chocolate! There was also a raffle you could enter if you showed up with the possibility of winning $20 gift cards to local gas stations and subway.

If you are undecided on what you want to do, try it out! Here at Muskingum and many other colleges you can sign up to rush and decide not to join a club at the end. It may sound cliché, but you only have four years of college and once those are over you can never make the choice to rush or pledge again. You never know until you try!

On the other hand, if you know that the Greek life is not right for you and you would rather just be an independent—go for it! Only about 30% of our campus is Greek, even though there are days where there seems to be everyone on the Quad wearing their Greek letters. College is about finding yourself and defining who you are. Take this opportunity as you travel through these years to take chances and make new experiences that will last a lifetime!

Have a terrific week! Hopefully the weather is as great where you are as it is where I am!

Here is a picture of my roommate (white skirt) and I! She is pledging to be in a sorority but we are still best friends despite our different feelings about Greek life!
