Love Others as I Love Myself

Like one of my fellow bloggers, Kelsey Apperson, I was also able to attend District Days for my sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha (District Days is an all day event that allows chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha within the same district–sending up to 18 members to represent the chapter–to learn more about ASA, as well as network with other active members and alumnae). During the course of the event, we all participated in the six word challenge inspired the late author Ernest Hemingway, who had been challenged to compose a short story with, you guessed it, only six words. My six word story just so happens to be the title of this post. To the outsider, they look like a simple six word sentence. To me, it represents a mindset, a way of life, an opportunity of growth. For quite a few years, I have found myself with an imbalance of the two, often with my love for others outweighing my level of self love. Writing those six words on my index card showed me that I couldn’t have a sufficient amount of love for other people if I didn’t offer that same love to myself (even if I do have a heart of gold). I was hit with the reality that what I want from other people or what I give to them, I should also be providing me with that same effort. So, remember this, fellow & future Muskies: How you treat others in public is usually how you treat yourself in private. Be mindful of that.

Have a great rest of the week!
