Meeting Author Lesley Jenike

In my creative writing class, we recently entered our poetry unit for the semester. Aside from writing poems, we’ve also read some as part of class work. The majority of our poems are by poet Lesley Jenike, and they’re pretty interesting. Today, Lesley came to campus to do a poetry reading, and we got to talk to her in class about writing and poetry, as well as listen to her read some of her work.

As a bonus to the students enrolled in the advanced section of the class, we got to sit down and have lunch with Lesley as well (and paid by the English department no less). Since I want to be a writer myself, it was nice to spend some free time with a published writer, even if poetry isn’t my main focus. Lesley was super nice, and I had a great time. Talking to her reminded me that authors aren’t any different–they’re ordinary people, too, and that I don’t need to be anything special to get myself published one day.

This and the poetry reading I attended last semester were great opportunities. I’m really glad to have had these experiences, and am grateful to Muskingum for giving them to me!

On another note, here’s hoping the nice weather we had today is here to stay!
