RA Duty Strikes Back

I had my last RA duty of the semester last Wednesday and I planned on doing what everyone was doing that week: panicking for finals. Well honestly, I was trying to study as much as I could for finals since I was taking my finals early. Something about RA duties I may not have mentioned is that anything could happen during it. Unfortunately that can mean the fire alarm going off. With ovens an option for students in Finney, the alarm can go off a little more often there than in the other resident halls. So what does an RA do when the fire alarm goes off?

We encourage people near us to exit the building with us, as we notify the Area Coordinator on duty and wait for New Concord Fire Department to get there to inspect the building. We encourage that everyone stays a safe distance away from the building too and then we wait with them. I’ll be honest, I was a little annoyed at the fire alarm for going off, since I needed to be back in there studying for my finals. Then again I also enjoyed the excuse of not having to do work.

Luckily for the studying part, the fire department came rather quickly and inspected the building pretty quickly. The fire chief talked to me briefly as I was the RA on duty and it definitely helped turn around my night. He was very welcoming and in good spirits. He even told me how he had turned the t.v. on to the big bang theory before people came back in. It is nice to have someone cheerful around finals times.

On the note of finals, this is the first  day of finals week so I wanted to wish everyone good luck on finals! And a happy holidays to you all!

Until Next Semester,

Connor
